Parrot Biting?

Does Your Parrot Bite For No Reason?
Do You Want It To Stop?

Rest assured that BITING is one of the easiest behaviors to solve once you have some resources with which to work!

One of the first things you can do to stop a parrot from biting is to think back and remember what you both were doing right before he bit you. Maybe your parrot is simply trying to communicate something to you.

Also, think about what the parrot was doing right before he started biting. If you were both playing, you may have gotten your parrot too excited and he or she bit from that point. In this case, you can alter your mode of play.

Try to pinpoint the actions just before the biting. Or, watch your parrot’s body language and learn to predict when it will bite. These will give you clues to what is going on.

Sometimes parrot biting is actually what is known as “beaking.” This is when your parrot is feeling with its beak. When this is happening, if you pull back too fast this behavior can quickly turn into your parrot biting.

To stop a parrot from biting you need to make sure you are not having a loud reaction when the biting is taking place. If it hurts, you need to release yourself gently and go into another room to deal with the pain or anger the incident may have caused. Otherwise, your negative actions could actually be reinforcing the biting.

It is very important to not take your parrot biting personally. Be sure to remain calm and unattached in order to detect what is provoking this behavior so you can end it once and for all. Also parrots are very empathetic and you don’t want your new bird to over react to your nervousness. So be calm and patient with your bird.

Another quick tip from our friends at BirdTricks to stop the parrot biting is to make sure you use the “up” command whenever you go to take your bird out of its cage. If your parrot does not respond to the “up” command, it may just be that it wants to be left alone to eat, sleep, or play. Respect these times and you will have a much happier relationship with your parrot.

Parrots, Parrots, Parrots ..

Quick Facts:

The Amazing African Grey Parrot

The African Grey Parrot has been donned with two nicknames. The first is “The perfect mix of brains and beauty,” and the second one is “The Cadillac of Parrots.” One reason African Grey Parrots have these nicknames is because of their ability to talk. They far exceed the talking capabilities of other parrots.

Speaking words is not the only talent of the this amazing parrot. They are also known for being able to imitate things like phones, microwave ovens, answering machines, other birds, and chain saws.

The Intelligent Amazon Parrot

One of the most interesting and exotic birds that many owners love to show off is the Amazon Parrot.

Amazon Parrots are native to the New World, as Christopher Columbus gave them their name when he brought some birds back home with him after his first voyage to the Americas.

There are 27 different species and they live from South America to Mexico and also in the Caribbean.

The Amazon Parrot talks so much that many people have wondered  if they are just mimicking their owners and not actually speaking. Research, however, has upheld that they are actually speaking and that they are very intelligent.

The Handsome Cockatiel

A Cockatiel is a type of bird that belongs to the parrot group. Its most basic color is gray with both the male and female having gray bodies, beaks and feet. Mature males will have solid yellow heads and black feathers on the underside of their tails while mature females will have more of a grayish head and barred yellow with black feathers on the underside of their tails. However, there are many different color mutations in Cockatiels.

The Entertaining Cockatoo

Cockatoos are comical and entertaining companions. If you have chosen either an Umbrella, a Moluccan, or Goffin, you have picked an intelligent, affectionate, playful, and enterprising bird. In fact, welcoming one into your home is like adding another member to the family!

A Cockatoo, by their very nature, may present challenges. Known as “Velcro” birds, they can be noisy, demanding, and inclined to want to “love you to death.” To maintain an emotionally healthy relationship between you and your parrot, you will need professional and reliable advice.

The Playful Conure

Conures are active, lively, and bold. They will clown around with their toys, screech in mock anger, and then beg for a scratch. Accomplished performers, Conures will lie on their backs and play dead or hang from a finger playfully.

The Handy Eclectus Parrot

The Eclectus Parrot behaves differently than other parrots and their signaling communication is also different.

The Eclectus Parrots unusual quiet and calm demeanor is different from other parrots as well. What would put other parrots into a tail spin of action to escape does not even bring the Eclectus Parrot to its feet. The Eclectus Parrot does best in a home that is organized and calm. However, they can withstand quite a bit of noise and not react to it, which makes them a very handy pet.

The Independent Indian Ringneck

The Indian Ringnecks are fiercely independent, often rejecting the hand that feeds them.  They prefer to stay on their perch playing than to be handled by humans.

Being strong and not prone to disease, they have parleyed themselves to the top of the list as far as parrots are concerned. Even though they are a fairly new species, they have become one of the most popular parrots around.

The Extraordinary Macaw

Macaws are no ordinary pets. Their sheer size and biting capability is reason for caution. One look at their beak, sometimes called a “can opener” attached to feathers, is enough to make most people run for cover. And yet most of us are captivated by the beautiful plumage and fascinating personalities these birds display.

The Average Quaker Parrot

A Quaker Parrot is generally quite average in appearance and sound. However, they have an ability to learn to speak our human language at an incredibly early age. There have been reports that sometimes a Quaker Parrot will begin to speak their first words when only six weeks old.

Due to this early speaking ability, the Quaker Parrot is overtaking the cockatiel as the favorite bird to teach to talk.

The Crop Eating Senegal Parrot

The Senegal Parrot is a unique species of bird. Senegal Parrots originate from West Africa. It moves about in the territory it lives in, spending the day following the fruits and blossoms that make up their main diet.

Because Senegal’s often feeds on farmer’s crops, it has gained the nickname of “pest.”
